One day, a young girl asks her father: “Dad, what are demons?”
The father responds: “Demons are things about yourself you do not like. Demons are things about yourself you do not know. Demons are things about yourself you forgot.
If haunted by a demon, ask God to shine a light on the demon. Command the demon to identify itself. If at first it does not work, be consistent in your practice until the demon is revealed to you.
Inevitably, the demon will give in and choose to show itself.
When confronted with the demon, you may notice that its cowering in the corner and looks a lot like a frightened child. That’s because it is.
Approach it. Pick it up and coddle it. Heal its wounds. Be loving and patient with it.
“But Dad, am I to love the demon even if it is something about myself I don’t like”? The young girl asks.
“Especially if it is something about yourself you do not like.” The father responds.
“The demon is a part of you. The demon feels the same angst and shame and discomfort you feel. It is up to you to end the suffering for both of you.
It is your responsibility to heal its wounds because you created it and you abandoned it. It is not the demon’s fault you forgot about it.
So there’s something about yourself you do not like. Once you know what it is, address it. Change it. Not with anger or spite, but with Peace in your heart.
One day, you may graciously wonder how this innocent baby-demon got the best of you and became your greatest teacher yet.
Remember, God will never give you what you want nor what you need. God will always give you what you deserve.
And I know you, baby girl. You deserve peace and you deserve love. You deserve everything you want and are willing to do what it takes to get.”
